about

"What a year it has been for Helefonix. From years of promoting, releasing and supporting other people’s music, 2021 has seen Helen Froggatt (nee Meissner) establish herself pretty quickly across a wide audience as an artist in her own right. That period has included collaborating with poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan and legendary Parish Council Secretary Jackie Weaver, releasing her debut album and performing live at the Tomorrow Calling Festival and Vanishing Point. She also won an award for her music. You might think she would fancy a few months off but instead she has delivered another new EP.

The title is an indication of the Disco-infused direction Helen’s music has been taking over recent months. She is skilled at mixing samples of recorded music [from public domain royalties-free tracks that are copyright cleared] and then creating new ideas and themes around them. On this EP she also lets us hear her own voice on two tracks for the first time. Upstream viewers got a first taster when the video for Out of my hair was on the show on 19th October.

All in all, a fun EP that sees Helen moving in a more consciously dance-orientated direction and away from the semi-classical and ambient tones of recent works [although with the caveat that I like both]. Another intriguing step on a journey that has seen her release an impressive catalogue of tracks in 2021. Will she take that break now? Knowing Helen, I doubt it!" Neil March
